'Prevent Thalassemia' is an awareness campaign disseminated as brochures to youth of marriageable age.
The campaign refrains two carriers of the trait from marrying one another, or suggests adoption as an alternative to having children.
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder where heamoglobin fails to form completely. If left without blood transfusion, infants die before the age of two years. Bone marrow transplant is the only permanent solution for the disorder, but its a risky and expensive treatment.
